Why screening is important
People who smoke or chew tobacco, use Betel Quid or Paan Masala or regularly drink more than 3-4 units of alcohol per day for men, or 2-3 units per day for women, are at increased risk of mouth cancer. An increasing number of young people are being affected, and 25% of the cases have no associated significant risk factors.
If you do get mouth cancer, early diagnosis means a very good chance of cure.
We include screening for mouth cancer using the Velscope in all our Initial Examinations for members and then regularly at every recall examination. In this way we can ensure that any cancerous tissue is detected early and give you the best chance of receiving successful treatment.
Why we use the Velscope
The Velscope is an amazing piece of equipment. It uses technology called Tissue Fluorescence Visualisation to detect abnormal tissue in the mouth. In a procedure lasting only a couple of minutes, we shine a blue light into your mouth that excites the tissues, then use a special viewing instrument to see the results. Normal tissue shows as a green fluorescent pattern whilst abnormal tissue shows up as a dark area that stands out against it. It is a totally pain free and non-invasive method of reliably screening for oral cancer.
