When patients start their Invisalign journey with us, one of the first questions on their lips is, ‘how many Invisalign aligners will I need?’ Although the true number varies on a case-by-case basis, this blog will give you an idea of what to expect with how many invisalign aligners you will need.

How Does Invisalign Work?

If you have a minor orthodontic issue – such as crowding, spacing, overbite or underbite – that you would like to address, Invisalign could be the perfect solution. This discreet, convenient and comfortable treatment uses a series of subtly different and completely bespoke Invisalign clear aligners, each of which is worn for 20-22 hours a day but can be removed for eating and drinking, to gently and gradually move your teeth into position.

The average Invisalign journey takes around 12 months, by which point you can expect to achieve the straighter, healthier, more confident smile you have always dreamed about.

How Many Invisalign Aligners Will I Need?

Many patients are curious about how many Invisalign aligners they will need throughout their treatment. Of course, since no two mouths are the same, no two Invisalign treatments are the same either. Therefore, the number of Invisalign aligners you need to reach your smile goals will be completely individual to you. But, as a general rule of thumb, experience has shown us that there are some averages we can use as a guideline in certain cases.

Depending on your circumstances and the complexity of your case, you might need the following number of aligners:

  • Mild – A mild amount of movement may only require five to seven Invisalign aligners.
  • Moderate – Moderate crowding or spacing could require 14 to 26 Invisalign aligners.
  • Severe – Severe spacing or crowding could require upwards of 26 Invisalign aligners.

Having said all that, when you consider that most Invisalign treatments take an average of one year to complete and that retainers are routinely swapped every fortnight (more on this next), most people will likely need roughly 26 Invisalign aligners. That is unless their orthodontic issue is on the milder end of the scale.

How Often Will I Switch Invisalign Aligners?

As we mentioned above, Invisalign aligners usually need to be changed every two weeks. Most Invisalign treatment plans prescribe a fortnightly switch of aligners because it generally takes that long for your teeth to move gradually into the right position. Each new fortnightly set of aligners moves your teeth closer to the ultimate smile goal you will have agreed with your dentist at the start of the Invisalign process.

What Happens If I Lose My Invisalign Aligners?

If you lose your Invisalign aligners, don’t worry! It isn’t a big deal. People lose their Invisalign aligners all the time, which is a natural consequence of our hectic modern lives. If you do happen to lose your current set of Invisalign aligners, there is no need to panic. All you have to do is follow these three simple steps to ensure you can get back on track with your Invisalign journey in no time, with minimal stress or delay!

  • Call us straight away – We will recommend the best course of action.
  • Use your previous retainer – This will ensure your teeth don’t drift too much.
  • Don’t move on to your next retainer – This can harm your overall progress.

How Are Invisalign Aligners Made?

Your Invisalign aligners are tailor-made for you. They have to be to treat your specific orthodontic issue and exert the right amount of pressure in all the right places to move your teeth into position. So, to make your completely bespoke set of aligners, your Invisalign provider will take a 3D digital scan of your teeth before using Invisalign’s software to plan the exact movements of your teeth, which they will show you using a 3D model.

All that 3D modelling allows you to see how your teeth will move over time and how your eventual smile will look. Clever stuff! Then, once you are happy with your treatment plan, your dentist will send the details of your case – including the number of aligners you will need – to Invisalign for them to make your custom-made aligners. It usually takes around 3-6 weeks for your complete set of Invisalign aligners to be made and delivered.
